The beautiful South Pacific. Whether you’re planning a Fiji holiday or a fishing expedition off the Cook Islands, there’s something truly enchanting about this incredibly stretch of ocean and islands. With so much to see and do, (and so many sunsets to witness) fitting it all in can be a mission. Here, we share four experiences that most encapsulate the spirit and vibe of the tropical paradise that awaits you.
Tongan Village
Many nations of the South Pacific are unique in that although they follow contemporary systems of parliament, many of the more rural areas still adhere to traditional customs, such as having a tribal structure. Tonga is one such place. Tonga is a kingdom, with a functioning royal family, and smaller villages are organised through a tribal structure. The chief of a Tongan village is still afforded much respect and plays a real role in its governance, which means that visiting a Tongan village can be an incredible cultural and educational experience. Tonga earned the nickname of ‘The Friendly Isles’ when Captain James Cook first explored the islands and received a hearty welcome. This nickname still rings true, with families and villagers only too happy to welcome visitors into their world. Share a meal with locals and learn about the customs and traditions of that region—you’ll never forget the experience.
Samoan Rugby Match
For some contemporary Pacific Islands culture, try to take in a rugby match in Samoa. A love of football has long swept the island, both in regards to American Football (American Samoa) and the more popular Rugby. Samoans not only have a raging passion for the sport, but the body mass and skills to make them formidable players. Many Samoan players are signed to Australian and New Zealand rugby teams, but the national team doesn’t do too badly either! Get swept up in the passion and watch the traditional battle dance before the match commences (this is much like the Maori ‘Haka’).
Fishing off the Cook Islands
Ethnically Maori, the people of the Cook Islands have a love affair with the sea that stretches back millennia. The relatively unspoiled islands that make up the Cook Islands are perched amid some of the best fishing spots anywhere in the world, which means a fishing tour with a local is almost certain to yield fruit. Cook your fish in the sand in a traditional Hangi once you return, and relish the taste of fresh seafood eaten the way nature intended it.
Snorkeling in Fiji
The waters around the Fijian islands are teeming with life, and if you fancy a look at some truly beautiful coral reefs and underwater eco-systems, there are few places better than Fiji in which to do it. Swim alongside sea turtles and see if you can find Nemo—but remember to bring that underwater camera!
Weather you’re testing the waters on a Fiji cruise or simply island hopping through the South Pacific, there are activities and sights everywhere that’ll make it incredibly hard to leave.

Every traveler knows how easily the wallet becomes feather-light towards the end of the journey. But if you are careful, that is know how to spend wisely, you could well end up saving those precious dollars.
You could fly to Spain and back for only $ 599. Take the time – and trouble – to visit relevant websites, especially Kayak.com and make comparisons. Most airlines offer cheaper deals for weekday flights. You would be well-advised to book very far in advance to get the best deals possible although some last-minute deals can be pretty good too. If you are travelling from the US, it might be cheaper to first travel to the UK. Booking your flight through reliable websites saves you some extra pennies as there is no agent (read middleman) involved. Some airlines known to provide the cheapest flights are: Thomas Airways, Ryanair, and Fly Thomas Cook.
Accommodation
You don’t want to spend all your money on accommodation while traveling, do you? The good news is that you don’t have to. You can rent holiday homes rather cheaply over the net. And if you are not fussy about living away from the city center you can actually strike a great deal. A holiday apartment in Catrojja near Valencia comes as cheaply as $ 326 for an entire week, to cite just one instance.
If you are traveling alone, however, try any of the youth hostels. They are dirt cheap, as low as $ 14 per day. Most of them are located in the city center. They are clean and offer the best facilities including guided tours, good wholesome food, etc. In other words, they offer good value for money. You can book online sans hassles.
Traveling around
Whenever possible try ‘car sharing’ as a means of travel. It is not only lighter on your pocket but also more eco-friendly. The more adventurous might want to hitchhike but it can turn out to be dangerous. Don’t lose your life (or worse) in order to save a few dollars.
Catch the bus as often as you can as bus travel turns out cheaper compared to the train. Buses in Spain also cover more routes than trains.
If you happen to be in one of the large cities like Madrid or Barcelona you can also try catching the underground metro trains, which are super fast and efficient. Operating the ticket machines is relatively easy and you can also change the display system into English.
Eating cheaply in Spain
You may not believe this but Spanish breakfasts are costlier compared to Spanish lunches. While ordering lunch, however, it is best not to go the a la carte way as this could turn out to be more expensive. Most restaurants offer a menu del dia or menu of the day that covers at least three courses.
Some people prefer to exist on ‘tapas’ alone. Tapas are small yet tasty portions that can be quite filling. Avoid the swanky restaurants; don’t be afraid of going into overcrowded tapas bars. Simply point to what you want. Some bars offer free tapas with a drink.
Live, travel, and eat cheaply in Spain. As you can see, it is not difficult!

These days it seems that many companies are offering us travel insurance. How do you know who to go with so many offers coming from so many different directions? You must always read the terms of your policy and know what you are covered for.
Buying Direct. Many companies advertise cheap travel insurance, but you need to make sure that you are getting value for money – cheap is not always good. You have a better chance of getting more value for your money if you are buying direct from an insurance company which is also an underwriter.
Credit Card. Many credit card companies also offer free travel insurance coverage. Don't assume you automatically have it when you travel. Most of them will require you to book the flights and other arrangements through your credit card. Expect a few more hurdles to jump through. Nothing is automatic and instant. Make sure you understand what it means and actually how much coverage you are getting. You will need to have a platinum or gold card at least. You might need to pay some extra fees to make sure you are completely covered.
Travel Agents. If you are talking face to face with a travel agent, at least you can ask a number of questions, but remember at the end of the day they are not the insurance company. They are not the underwriters. It is the underwriters who actually make the decision and the insurance company is the company that you will be dealing with. You might be able to complain to your travel agent and get something in return if you are not covered on what you expected. That will have nothing to do with your travel insurance.
Online. Many of the biggest and best insurance companies are the companies that are insuring you are online. There is no need for your travel agent to make the arrangements for you. When that is the case, they are just making commission, and probably just what they are doing -- getting online for you.
Your Bank. Many banks offer travel insurance and other packages with your account. You also need to remember that many of them are just brokers and this is just another arm of their business. When it comes to time for claiming, they are not the company making the decision. Just because they are your bank, and you have a lot of savings with them does not mean you are any better covered. Make sure you are actually getting a better deal – it could be just another way for them to be getting your money without any real benefit to you.
